Geoscapes

Geoscapes consists of five mixed media geomineral-like sculptures of various sizes, each approximately 4 x 2 x 2 feet. The sculptures are comprised of polyethylene, glitter, and coated with marine enamel. They reference oil slicks and shimmer iridescent in the LED lights emitting from their plexiglass base. These LED's rotate through a spectrum of 200 colours that are proximity sensor enabled, using the arduino open-source platform. This radiated pool of light moves in a continuous concentric ring pattern which is effected by the proximity of viewers to the artwork; simulating a reciprocal and cyclical process that happens in geology. The formations of Geoscapes appear similar to the Fraser River’s geological compositions in the area of the salmon fishing and cannery operation. Referencing the geological habitat of salmon accentuates the interconnectedness of biological systems and reflects the challenges and impacts of social, cultural, and ecological transitions in communities historically dependent on fishing.
